  • Manila Water boosts East Zone security via Wawa-Calawis system

Amid intensifying climate conditions, Manila Water highlights the Wawa-Calawis Water Supply System as a critical, reliable source securing water for the East Zone concession area.

The Wawa-Calawis Water Supply System is a two-phase bulk water supply project designed not only to respond to current supply pressures but to future-proof Metro Manila’s growing demand for decades to come. More than an infrastructure project, it is a strategic investment in reliability, ensuring that water remains available not just today, but for the next generation of customers who will depend on it.

Phase 1 of the system, completed in 2022, established the Calawis Water Supply System anchored on the Tayabasan Weir. This facility delivers 80 million liters per day (MLD) to the Calawis water treatment plant, which has been supplying water to nearly one million residents across expansion areas in Antipolo City and nearby communities.

Building on this foundation, Phase 2 introduces the Upper Wawa Dam, the largest water source built in 50 years and now a critical component of Manila Water’s diversified source portfolio. Designed to deliver up to 710 MLD exclusive for the East Zone of Metro Manila and Rizal Province, the Upper Wawa Dam significantly expands supply capacity through an integrated system of treatment plants and conveyance infrastructure.

At the heart of this system is the Flow Diversion Structure, a key facility that efficiently distributes raw water to Manila Water’s treatment plants within the system, ensuring optimized and reliable delivery across the network.

  • House prosecutors ready with evidence in Duterte impeach trial – Ridon

A panel of prosecutors elected by the House of Representatives for Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial stands ready to present the evidence proving the charges of corruption and constitutional violation against her, Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon said on Monday.

Ridon said the 11-member prosecution team also pledged to comply with any directives from the Senate, which is sitting as an impeachment court, including all orders, processes and rulings.

“We are ready to present the evidence before the impeachment court in the coming days,” Ridon said in a statement.

On Monday, the Senate convened as an impeachment court for the impeachment trial of Duterte, who faces accusations of unexplained wealth, misusing confidential funds and threats to have President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr and his family assassinated in the case she was killed.

  • House prosecutors welcome Senate move to convene as impeachment court

Two members of the House of Representatives’ prosecution panel on Monday expressed relief that the Senate convened as an impeachment court and took jurisdiction of the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte.

In separate interviews on Monday, Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon and Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua said that the Senate Impeachment Court requiring Duterte to answer the articles of impeachment only shows that trial will push through.

“Well what’s important now is that they convened, like what our Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said, and they were able to present the articles of impeachment, at they issued a writ of summons to the Vice President.  So the impeachment proceedings has started moving and maybe we do not have any reason to have qualms about it,” Chua said in Filipino.

“So my understanding is that I think we are really proceeding to the trial proper of the Vice President’s impeachment.  So this means the questions relating to jurisdiction are settled because the moment that the Senate Impeachment Court seeks an answer and a reply, we are basically implementing already the Senate rules of impeachment,” Ridon pointed out.

Ridon said the House will comply with the requirements asked of them.

“We saw that they formally convened the Senate Impeachment Court, we thank the Senate for convening the Senate Impeachment Court and the prosecution panel of the House is preparing for any other orders that may be issued,” Ridon said.

  • House reso seeks probe into NGCP, power outages

A congressional resolution seeking to investigate the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) was filed at the House of Representatives on Monday after repeated transmission line failures that caused power supply disruptions.

House Speaker Faustino Dy III and Senior Deputy Speaker Ferdinand Hernandez filed House Resolution No. 1024 to probe into the tripping of two 500-kilovolt transmission lines that forced the Luzon grid to shed load, disrupting power supply for about 3.9 million customers.

“It is unacceptable that millions of Filipinos lost electricity due to the failure of our transmission system,” Dy said in a statement in Filipino.

“Power is not a luxury – it is a basic necessity that directly affects livelihoods, businesses, education and the daily lives of citizens,” he added.

NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza did not immediately reply to a Viber message seeking comment.

Last week, the Ilijan power complex in Batangas tripped back-to-back, prompting “grid emergency alerts” across Luzon and Visayas, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), which sought a probe into the electrical fault.

  • Prosecution team formally enters appearance in Duterte impeachment trial

The House of Representatives’ prosecution team has formally entered its appearance in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial at the Senate, with Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro being named as the lead public prosecutor.

Documents shared on Monday by the House committee on justice listed the 11-person prosecution team, and asked that all communications and documents be furnished to Luistro.

The said document was submitted by House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil to the Senate at 5:32 p.m. on Monday — just after the Senate convened itself as an impeachment court.

“The undersigned members of the House of Representatives, duly elected by the House of Representatives as members of the prosecution panel, respectfully enter their appearance as Public Prosecutors,” the document sent to the Senate Impeachment Court stated.

“It is, thus, respectfully requested that, henceforth, all copies of all pleadings, resolutions, decisions, notices, and other processes of this Honorable Court be furnished to the Lead Public Prosecutor, Representative Gerville R. Luistro, at the following address and electronic email address indicated below,” it added.

The 11-person prosecution team was officially elected last Tuesday, May 12, featuring a mix of holdovers from the first prosecution team tapped when Duterte was impeached in February 2025, and new members.
